Phonics Screening Check

All Year 1 children will take part in the Phonics Screening Check to assess their Phonics knowledge and decoding and blending skills. Children in Year 2 will also take the check if they did not meet the required standard in Year 1 or they have not taken the test before. The check is made up of 40 real and rubbish (alien) words for the children to read.

How can I support my child at home?

• Read as much as possible to and with your child
• Practice your Phonics flashcards
• Blend the sounds in a word by pointing to each one
• Add sound buttons to support the reading of each word
• Phonics Play – Buried Treasure, Dragons Den, Picnic on Pluto
