Summer 2
Reception
This half term, we will be travelling around the world and exploring the question ‘How are countries different’. This topic will see Little Acorns travel to many places from Kenya to Antarctica and from France to Australia. We will be investigating famous landmarks, discovering animals from around the world and tasting foods from around the world. We are very excited to be finishing our topic this half term with a trip to Dudley Zoo to explore how many animals from around the world we can see.
In English, we will be focusing on a range of fiction and non-fiction books, including Rumble in the Jungle, Lost and Found and Handa’s Surprise. We will continue to use our Talk 4 Writing actions to help us learn texts and will be applying the skills we learn in Phonics to write simple sentences.
In Maths, we will be focusing on numbers up to 20 and will be beginning to learn about adding more and taking away. We will continue to develop our subitising and number recognition.
In Phonics, we will begin to work on Phase 4. We shall be focusing on reading and writing longer words. The children will bring home a set of word cards every week to practice reading at home.
Spring 2
This half term, we will be exploring the question ‘How do we travel and how has it changed?’. This topic will see Little Acorns learn all about different forms of transport; exploring how we could travel to different places, thinking about how this has changed and creating our very own vehicles.
Reception
In English, we will be focusing on a range of fiction and non-fiction books, including Mr Gumpy’s Motor Car, Oi! Get Off Our Train and Emma Jane’s Aeroplane. We will continue to use our Talk 4 Writing actions to help us learn texts and will be applying the skills we learn in Phonics to write lists and simple sentences.
In Maths, we will be learning about the numbers 9 and 10. We will be both comparing numbers to 10 and exploring our number bonds to 10. We will also begin to learn about addition and will continue to develop our subitising and number recognition.
In Phonics, we will be recapping our Phase 3 phonemes. We shall be focusing on reading and writing words containing these sounds and will begin to use our blending skills to read longer words. The children will bring home a set of word cards every week to practice reading at home.
Spring 1
This half term, we will be exploring the enquiry question – ‘What can we see in the woodland?’ We will be learning all about animals that we can see in a woodland habitat, where they live and what they eat.
We will be focusing on quality texts linked to this theme and will have lots of exciting learning opportunities in our classroom for the children to explore.
Reception -
In English, we will be continuing to use Talk for Writing to help us learn different texts. We will be focusing on the stories ‘We’re Going on a Bear Hunt’, ‘The Gruffalo’ and ‘Owl Babies’. We will be applying the skills we have learnt in Phonics to help us read and write simple words and captions.
In Phonics, we will begin to learn our new Phase 3 phonemes. We will learn what each grapheme looks like and will practice reading and writing words containing each sound. The children will continue to bring home flashcards every week for the new phonemes we have learnt.
In Maths, we will continue our journey to become Mathematical Masters. We will be exploring different ways to make 5 and will be learning about the numbers 6 and 7.
Autumn 2
This half term we will be going 'Out of this World!' and exploring the enquiry question 'What is it like in space and how do I get there?'
This topic will see Little Acorns going on an adventure into Space! We will be investigating what we can see in space, discovering all about Neil Armstrong and learning about and making our own mini versions of our Solar System. We are hoping to discover some astronauts of the future in Little Acorns!
Autumn 1
This half term we will be exploring the enquiry question “Who Am I?”. As the question suggests, we will be learning all about ourselves and what makes us special. We will have a range of different themes we will cover throughout this topic:
Throughout this half term we shall be using Talk for Writing to help us learn key nursery rhymes including Humpty Dumpty and Old McDonald Had a Farm. We shall also be exploring different stories based around ourselves including The Colour Monster, Rainbow Fish and Elmer.
In Maths, we will be learning to match and sort objects, compare amounts using the language of more and fewer and explore repeating patterns.
