Curriculum Overview

Summer 1

 

 

Our theme this half term will be ‘Farms’ 
 

This theme will see us explore what animals and babies live on a farm, investigate life cycles and discover what food may grow on a farm. We will also be welcoming some very special visitors into Little Acorns. 

 

During the half term, we will be exploring different books linked to farms and farm animals including Farmer Duck, Farmyard Hullaballoo and What the Ladybird Heard.

 

English

 

In English, we will be continuing to develop actions to help us learn and retell our key texts for this half term. We will be writing lists for Farmer Duck, letters to Farmer Brown and farmyard animal riddles.

 

In our writing, we will be segmenting words and putting these together to create captions and simple sentences. We will also be starting to use finger spaces to separate words and a full stop at the end of a sentence.

 

Phonics

 

In Phonics, we will continue to review our Phase 3 sounds. We will be focusing on identifying digraphs within words and using our blending and segmenting skills to read and write longer Phase 3 sounds.

 

Maths

 

In Maths, we will begin to learn about numbers to 20 and beyond, exploring different patterns we notice when counting and looking at numerals. We will continue to develop our subitising skills, using known number facts to help us identify the total and explore the composition of numbers up to 10. This half term will also see the children start to explore simple addition and subtraction number sentences, using practical resources to help find the answer.

 

Spring 2

 

This half term, our topic will be ‘Once Upon a Time’.  We will be exploring different traditional tales, using actions to retell the stories ‘Goldilocks and the Three Bears’ and ‘Jack and the Beanstalk’.  Over the half term, we will be creating the Three Bears cottage, making porridge and planting our very own beanstalks. We will continue to mark significant events throughout the year, learning about how and why Easter is celebrated.

 

Phonics

We will continue to review our Phase 3 sounds. We will be focusing on identifying digraphs within words and using our blending and segmenting skills to read and write Phase 3 words. Don’t forget to visit the Little Wandle website where you will find lots of helpful videos and resources to support your child’s learning at home. Hearing your child read is key to their development. If they read three or more times during the week, they will receive 3 dojo points.

 

Maths

We will continue to develop of knowledge of numbers of 10, exploring the composition of different numbers. We shall also continue to develop our subitising and reasoning skills.

 

English

We will be learning traditional tales such as ‘Goldilocks and the Three Bears’ and ‘Jack and the Beanstalk’. We will be developing actions to help us learn each story. We will continue to practice our letter formation, segmenting words and putting these together to create captions and phrases.

 

Spring 1

 

This half term, Little Acorns will be learning all about People Who Help Us. We will be exploring the different jobs they do, how they help people and how their jobs have changed. We will be having lots of special visitors over the next few weeks to tell us all about how they help people in their job.

 

In Phonics, we will be starting to learn our Phase 3 phonemes. We shall be practicing reading and writing words containing each sound and learning our new tricky words. In English, we will be focusing on key texts linked to our ‘People Who Help Us’ topic such as ‘Burglar Bill’ and ‘Supertato’. In Maths, we will continue to become masters of number. We will be developing the skill of subitising and exploring the composition of numbers to 10.

 

Autumn 2 

 

This half term will see Little Acorns exploring different celebrations from around the world from Bonfire Night to Diwali to Christmas. We will be learning about how different events are celebrated around the world, what things we like to celebrate and having our very own Christmas celebration in Little Acorns!

 

In Phonics, we will continue to learn our Phase 2 phonemes, practicing reading and writing simple CVC words. In our English, we will be focusing on key texts linked to our celebration topic such as ‘Little Glow’, ‘The Scarecrow’s Wedding’ and ‘The Jolly Christmas Postman’. In Maths, we will continue to become masters of number. We will be developing our subitising skills, making comparisons between amounts and exploring the composition of numbers up to 5.

 

Autumn 1

 

This half term, we will be exploring the enquiry question “Who Am I?”. As the question suggests, we will be learning all ourselves and what makes us special. We will have a range of different themes we will cover throughout this topic:

 

  • Our Families 
  • Ourselves
  • My home 
  • My body
  • My Birthday

 

Throughout this half term in English we shall be focusing on the story ‘The Gingerbread Man’. We shall also be exploring different stories based around our theme including The Colour Monster, Rainbow Fish and Elmer.

 

In Phonics, we will begin to learn our first Phase 2 initial sounds. We will be focusing on grapheme recognition, identifying initial sounds and orally blending sounds to make a word.

 

In Maths, we will be learning to match and sort objects, compare amounts using the language of more and fewer and exploring length, mass and capacity.
