Curriculum Overview

Summer 1 Topic

Our topic for next half term will be, 'Once Upon a Time'. As you can probably guess we will be learning about traditional stories and tales such as The Gingerbread Man, Goldilocks and the Three Bears and Cinderella.

Over the half term, we will be designing ball gowns for Cinderella, decorating Gingerbread Men, making a new bowl for Goldilocks and lots of other fun activities. We shall also be looking at good characters and bad characters in different traditional tales and describing these.

In Reception, we will continue to work on Phase 3 Phonics. We shall continue to develop our reading and writing skills; recognising Phase 3 phonemes in words and reading and writing a caption. In Maths, we will focus on numbers up to 20 and will begin to learn about adding more and taking away.

In Pre-School, we will continue to develop our counting skills, confidently counting a set of objects and beginning to recognise some numerals. We shall also continue our Phase 1 Phonics, developing our listening skills ready for starting school.

Spring 2 Topic

This half term our topic will be 'A Bugs Life'

This topic will see Little Acorns become minibeast experts; naming and describing minibeasts, hunting for minibeasts in our Forest School and identifying how different minibeasts are similar and different.

We will be looking at a range of fiction and non-fiction books with a minibeast theme, including The Very Hungry Caterpillar, Mad About Minibeasts and Superworm.

In Reception, the children will begin to learn their Phase 3 phonemes, reading and writing words containing our new digraphs and trigraphs. In Maths, we will learn about the numbers 9 and 10, explore our number bonds to 10 and about 2D and 3D shapes.

In Pre-School, the children will continue to develop their listening skills; identifying different environmental and instrumental sounds and exploring body percussion and voice sounds.

Spring 1 Topic

Our topic for this half term is ‘Old McDonald Had a Farm’. We will be learning about all the different animals that live on a farm, baby animals and food that grows on a farm. We may even be having a visit from a real farmer! We are also looking forward to learning all about Chinese New Year.

In English, we will be continuing to use Talk for Writing to help us learn different texts. We will be focusing on the stories ‘What the Ladybird Heard’ and ‘Farmyard Hullaballoo’. We will be applying the skills we have learnt in Phonics to help us read and write simple words and sentences.

In Phonics, we will continue to practice our Phase 2 letter formation, writing lots of words containing each letter. We will also continue to learn our Phase 2 tricky words.

In Maths, we will continue our journey to become Mathematical Masters. We will be exploring different ways to make 5 and will be learning about the numbers 6, 7, 8, 9 and 10.
