Curriculum Overview

Spring 1

 

Our topic for this half term is ‘Superheroes Unite’. We will be learning all about people who help us and will hopefully have some special visitors to tell us all about how they help people in their job. If you or any family members have a job which involves helping people, please let a member of the Little Acorns team know.

 

 

In English, we will be continuing to use Talk for Writing to help us learn different texts. We will be focusing on the stories ‘Supertato’ and ‘Superworm’. We will be applying the skills we have learnt in Phonics to help us read and write simple words and sentences.

 

In Phonics, we will continue to practice our Phase 2 letter formation, writing lots of words containing each letter. We will also continue to learn our Phase 2 tricky words.

 

In Maths, we will continue our journey to become Mathematical Masters. We will be exploring different ways to make 5 and will be learning about the numbers 6, 7, 8, 9 and 10.

Autumn 2

 

This half term we will be ‘Amazing Animals’. We will be learning about a range of different aniamls from tiny minibeasts to

lions and elephants! Over the half term, we will be making animal sock puppets, exploring the art of Henri Rousseau and comparing different animal habitats.

 

 

Reception:

In English, we will continue to use Talk for Writing to help us learn different texts. We will be focusing on the stories ‘The Tiger Who Came to Tea’, ‘Giraffes Can’t Dance’ and ‘Pig in the Pond’. We will be applying the skills we have learnt in Phonics to help us read and write simple words.

In Phonics, we will continue to learn our Phase 2 phonemes, reading words containing each sound.

In Maths, we will be learning about the numbers 1, 2 and 3, exploring how we can represent and form these numbers and about their composition.

Autumn 1

Our topic for the first half term will be ‘All About Me’ As the name suggests, we will be learning all about ourselves and what makes us special. We will have a range of different themes we will cover throughout this topic:

 

  • Our Families
  • Ourselves
  • My home
  • My body
  • My Birthday

 

In Reception, we shall be using Talk for Writing to help us learn nursery rhymes including Humpty Dumpty and Hickory Dickory Dock. We shall also be learning the story ‘The Colour Monster’. In Maths, we will be learning to match and sort a objects, compare amounts using the language of more and fewer and explore repeating patterns.
