Phase 2

When the children start Reception, they begin Phase 2, where they start to learn some of the sounds (phonemes) that letters (graphemes) make.

Children are taught to make the links between the phonemes (sounds) they hear and the grapheme (letters) they read and write. They begin to develop the skills of segmenting and blending and learn how to form each letter shape, following our letter formation rhymes. Children are also introduced to their first set of tricky words which can’t be segmented or blended.

What do the children learn in Phase 2?
